Research:
I am a Senior Lecturer and Subject Head in the UFS Department of Communication Science, specialising in the fields of interpersonal and family communication. I received my PhD in 2011 from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Through my research, I explore the social and familial experiences of people with non-traditional family identities and am currently working on a research project investigating transracial adoption in South Africa. I am an NRF-rated researcher (Y1), have published in international rated journals and books, and have presented my research at a number of international conferences in the fields of communication science, SOTL, and psychology. My most recent article has appeared in Adoption Quarterly and South African Review of Sociology, and I have contributed chapters in Casing Communication Theory and Pathways Across Cultures: Intercultural Communication in South Africa. I am currently supervising a number of MA and PhD students in a project on family communication in African families in South Africa.
