Academic Teaching Responsibilities

B Med Sc Hons,
M Med Sc
PhD

Other responsibilities:

Principal investigator studying vector borne and zoonotic viruses. We aim to increase our knowledge on B cell and T cell epitopes to facilitate diagnosis and vaccine development. The lab primarily focuses on host immune responses to arboviral infections specifically characterizing humoral and cellular immune responses in patients with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus; epitope discovery for development of multivalent DNA-based vaccines; development of diagnostic assays including protein microarrays for differential diagnosis of CCHF; development of molecular and serological assays for identification of arboviruses; and evaluation of vaccines against CCHF and Rift Valley fever viruses.

Special interests and past experience

Diagnosis and investigation of viral haemorrhagic fevers, arboviruses, emerging viruses and zoonotic viruses

Member of international outbreak response teams for investigation of viral haemorrhagic fever outbreaks

1.Democratic Republic of the Congo, 1995. Member of international team investigating outbreak of Ebola virus in Kikwit, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
2.Saudi Arabia, September, 2000. Travelled to Saudi Arabia as a member of a team of scientists from the Special Pathogens Unit to set up laboratory facilities for testing livestock sera for evidence of Rift Valley fever infection.
3.Uganda, November, 2000. Member of international team investigating outbreak of Ebola virus in Gulu, Uganda.
