Professionalism and innovation are the cornerstones and form the backbone of any institution. Staff Development has the duty to empower staff with the required knowledge and skills, to adhere to the challenges within their job descriptions and to stay in touch with new demands faced daily, in a changing environment. The student as client and beneficiary is the focus and end product of any institution. Institutions are measured on their throughput and quality of students they deliver.

The aim of staff development is embedded in the vision and mission of the University of the Free State to be innovative, excellent and reasonable to develop staff to reach institutional goals. This is done through staff development and skills training to empower staff in the execution of their duties respective and to give them opportunities to reach goals.

The aim of staff development sessions is to give opportunity for own professional development and to promote life-long learning. A variety of courses/seminars/workshops are presented and repeated annually, e.g. courses for newly appointed lecturers, assessment of student learning, electronic portfolios, research methodology, postgraduate education, processing of marks on databases, time management, and conflict management.

Any department within the Faculty of Health Sciences is also welcome to organise staff development sessions, based on their own needs, with the Division Health Sciences Education.
