"Students should hit the ground running"
Aim - The aim of Student Academic Development as a focus area within the Division of Health Sciences Education is to focus on promoting a culture of relevant education in the Faculty of Health Sciences by infusing generic skills such as communication technologies, teamwork, and reflective practice in teaching and learning activities.
Goals
- Build capacity/critical mass with a view to develop in students certain targeted skills, knowledge and attitudes.
- Work collaboratively with members of the academic staff community to ensure teaching and learning experiences that will enhance the academic development of students in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Range of activities
- Delivery, administration, and coordination of an academic preparation programme at first-year level.
- Delivery, administration, and coordination of general skills modules at first-year level.
- Delivery, administration, and coordination of academic development sessions.
- Coordinate specific individual sessions.
- Support and collaboration with existing services and programme initiatives to support and develop students.
New Academic Tutorial Programme (NATP)
Coordinated by the Centre for Teaching and Learning in collaboration with faculty tutorial coordinators, NATP student assistants and academic disciplines. The programme is based on Supplemental Instruction principles, but is contextualised to meet the unique needs of the UFS.
