Dr Fenella Somerville


Dr Fenella holds a PhD in Development Studies from the University of the Free State and Master of Education (cum laude) at Wits University. She is currently lecturer and researcher in Development Studies at UFS with a forthcoming monograph based on her doctoral research titled “Inequalities, higher education choices and social mobility: A perspective from the Global South”. Her doctoral research focused on the employability of private higher education graduates in South Africa. Her current research involves a project together with Prof Melanie Walker on the Uni-Planet and Reparative Action (Uni-PRA) drawing on Achille Mbembe’s notion of ‘planetary consciousness’ to explore the role of the university in fostering capabilities for eco-social flourishing through reparative pedagogies and lifelong learning. She is actively involved in the activities of the HDCA and currently one of two coordinators of the Education thematic group.
