The research network for Southern African linguistics: the Southern African Linguistics Network (SALN) was started in 2021 by Hlumela Mkabile (UFS), Kristina Riedel (UFS) and Hannah Gibson (Essex/UFS). The network aims to bring together researchers and students who are interested in the linguistics of the languages of Southern Africa on a virtual platform that we hope will grow broader over time (taking inspiration from the Rift Valley Network and similar initiatives). Since mid-2021, we have been hosting an online seminar talk each month, approximately, during the South African teaching semesters.
We welcome content on all languages and varieties used in the region (signed and spoken, from any family or isolate). Our approach to linguistics is based on the Southern African Microlinguistics Workshop (SAMWOP) one, and includes theoretical and descriptive linguistics, as well as more data-oriented sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics. The webinar is meant to open up spaces for interactions like those we normally have at SAMWOP, Southern African Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Society (SALALS) and other events to happen throughout the year.
