Gender Studies was established in 2001 and has since grown in visibility and reach. The programme is embedded in the Centre for Africa Studies. It attracts students from a variety of vocational backgrounds, including the non-profit sector, psychology, sociology and education, to name but a few.
The Gender Studies programme draws on skills from a variety of disciplines and some of our course offerings include:
- Gender and Work
- Gender and the Politics of Security
- Gender and the Environment
- Gender and Religion
- Gender and Sexuality
- Feminist Theory, and
- Research Methodology
The programme is conscious of both the academic and practical skills needed in order to address gender inequities in society and aims to empower students to conceptually understand and practically engage with gender sensitive needs in academia and the public sector.
The high incidence of gender-based violence and gender equity issues in South Africa also positions the programme to generate valuable data on gender and development issues in Africa by conducting quality research.
