Who should apply?

Anybody with an interest in gender and equity issues in South Africa, and individuals who want to effect change in organisations and society are eligible to apply for a Postgraduate Diploma and MA Degree in Gender Studies.

Admission requirements

Postgraduate Diploma

Students are admitted to the Postgraduate Diploma if they fulfil the requirements mentioned in the General Regulations and already have a qualification at NQF level 6 (a bachelor’s degree or equivalent), but with the concession that a wide range of majors will be considered appropriate for admission. Selection tests in language and comprehension are also applicable.

MA Gender Studies

Students are admitted to the MA Gender Studies if they fulfil the requirements mentioned in the General Regulations and already have a qualification at NQF level 7 (an honours or a four-year degree, or a Postgraduate Diploma), but with the concession that a wide range of majors will be considered appropriate for admission. Selection tests in language and comprehension are also applicable.

Application procedure

Students who are interested in applying for the Postgraduate Diploma or MA in Gender Studies should contact our offices directly by either sending an e-mail, phoning or visiting the office. Prospective students will be asked to leave their contact details, which will be used to send the complete application package.

All applications should reach us no later than 30 November. Please contact either the programme director or programme assistant for further enquiries.

Method of instruction

The programme utilises semi-distance education. Students enrolled in the taught courses (Honours and Structured MA degree) are required to attend contact sessions in Bloemfontein on the Main Campus four times a year. These sessions are compulsory and students who do not attend all sessions will lose their place in the programme. Examinations can be written at external centres in accordance with the university system.
