Postgraduate Programmes available in the Department of Chemistry

For those college graduates who consider pursuing a postgraduate degree or for students wanting to make a career in chemistry, our department offers BScHons (Bachelor Honours), MSc (Masters of Sciences), and PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) programs in Chemistry.

The Bachelor Honours degree in Chemistry is an equivalent of a professional qualification. Many employers in chemical industry require a Honours degree. Therefore, a BscHons degree is a wise choice to increase your chances of success on a job market. The Bachelor Honours degree is a must for those who plan to go for a postgraduate academic training. This program serves as a bridge between undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Study at Honours level combines coursework and research. It provides the perfect opportunity for undergraduate students to engage in some of the cutting-edge research in various subfields of chemistry and introduces them to the “real world” of academia.

Students who demonstrated academic success in their BSc and BScHons programs are encouraged to continue their education at a postgraduate level by joining our MSc program. Postgraduate study will improve their career prospects, whether they aim at an academic role or a professional career outside academia. MSc graduates will not only acquire a higher academic and professional qualification, but also develop transferable skills and potentially can continue with further academic training at a PhD level. We also welcome applicants who return to postgraduate study after several years of work as a professional to boost their career progress or switch career paths. However, prospective students should be aware that Master’s level research is not just an extension of what they have done for their undergraduate degree. MSc students will be required to do a lot of independent study and planning, to be creative, and to take much more responsibility for their research work.

After a successful completion of an MSc program, outstanding students with exceptional thirst of knowledge and capable of undertaking independent research at the most advanced academic level are invited to join our doctoral program (PhD). Our PhD program will prepare junior researchers for a successful career as a scholar in academia or for a leading position in industrial research and management. A doctoral degree is a prerequisite for becoming a university teacher and scholar of the highest rank at Senior Lecturer - Associate Professor – Professor levels.
