Short CV

Liezel started her tertiary education at the UFS in 1993 where she completed her B.Sc. (Computer Science), B.Sc.Hons. (Computer Science), M.Sc. (Geographic Information Systems) and Ph.D. (Higher Education Studies) degrees.

From 1997 until March 2003 she worked as a lecturer at the Department of Information Technology at the Central University of Technology (former Technikon Free State). During this time she was responsible for the lecturing of various courses, including System Analysis & Design, Databases, Principles of Computers, Artificial Intelligence, Expert Systems, User Interfaces and Internet Programming, from 2nd year up to B.Tech level.

Liezel joined our department in April 2003. She is currently responsible for the web development and Internet programming modules on both undergraduate and post-graduate level. In 2011, she was awarded the UFS Vice-chancellor`s award for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. In the same year, she was also one of five recipients of the HELTASA & Council for Higher Education (CHE) National Excellence in Teaching and Learning award. More recently, she was the winner of the 2020 UFS Excellence in Learning and Teaching award in the category: Research in Teaching and Learning.

Her main research interests lie with the integration of various educational technologies to enhance the teaching and learning experiences of Computer Science students. Liezel’s teaching philosophy is geared towards the empowerment of her students – to put them in a better position to take control of their own learning experiences.
