Our Campuses

Bloemfontein Campus

 Description: Keywords: Bloemfontein Campus

The Bloemfontein Campus dates back to 1904, making our university one of the oldest in the country.

The Main Building, as well as other buildings of historic and architectural importance, portray the calm, though vibrant atmosphere appropriate to an academic institution that is over a century old.

It is a vast campus where staff and students are encouraged to walk in order to enjoy the beautiful buildings, parks, lawns, artwork and other infrastructure. Resources, planning and dedicated workmanship have been spent not only on the development of the building and facility infrastructure, but also to make the campus user and experience friendly.

When on the campus, stop and rest under one of the shady trees. You will find that many of the benches represent artwork by famous South African artists. Linger at  the Thakaneng Bridge student centre where you can do everything from eating to buying the latest academic text books.

The Bloemfontein Campus is immaculately maintained and it provides a safe and secure environment for our more than 28 000 students who study here to fulfil their academic and human potential. Through an active programme of sports, cultural and social interaction, our students are also given the opportunity to develop into competent and compassionate future leaders.

Accommodation is very popular and our more than 23 residences are within walking distance of all facilities. The Bloemfontein Campus is regarded as the most integrated campus in South Africa with a very diverse group of students.

The campus is situated on one of the main roads into Bloemfontein, Nelson Mandela Drive, and within walking distance of shopping centres, schools and other places of interest.

Qwaqwa Campus

 Description: Keywords: Qwaqwa Campus

There is little doubt that the Qwaqwa Campus in the Eastern Free State is one of the most picturesque in the country, nestled between the Free State sandstone mountains and the open veld.

This campus, previously Uniqwa, under the auspices of the University of the North, was built in 1980 and incorporated into our university in January 2003. Both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and diplomas are offered on the Qwaqwa Campus.

The campus is a vibrant environment with over 4 000 students and 230 staff members. To date, over 5 500 degrees and 2 500 diplomas have been awarded.

Our Qwaqwa Campus plays an important role in bringing higher education to the Eastern Free State. The geographical location of the campus provides excellent research opportunities in fields such as montane ecology as well as human and economic development in rural communities.

The Eastern Free State is synonymous with the Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the majestic Maluti Mountains, and the picturesque town of Clarens. Golden Gate gets its name from the shades of gold cast by the sun of the sandstone cliff Brandwag that stands guard at the western entrance to the park. The park is home to a variety of animals and birds like the rare bearded vulture (lammergeyer) and bald ibis, which breed on the ledges in the sandstone cliffs.
