Presented by Dr Ruth Albertyn from 29 - 31 August 2012.

Previous Workshop

A workshop on Action research: Community Engagement Projects was presented on 12, 13 and 14 March 2012 by Dr Ruth Albertyn from ASEV Research and Development Consultants in the Western Cape. She is also currently a researcher at the Centre for Higher and Adult Education at the Stellenbosch University.

The focus of this workshop was on action research as an appropriate method for conducting relevant research in contexts where universities are situated. Action research has the potential to integrate the threefold roles of teaching, research and community engagement and provides publishable material using a scientific approach to practice. In this workshop the action research methodology was explored and examples of projects which could be integrated with service learning modules, were analysed.

The workshop followed a hands-on approach to planning an action research project. The nature of projects that are suitable for action research was discussed and participants were guided to select appropriate projects in their environment. The selected projects were used as the basis for practical exercises during the workshop. The adult education principles necessary for working with groups in action research projects were also discussed. Participants were exposed to the various techniques appropriate for application in the course of an action research project. They will be able to apply these methods to the planning of their projects.

This workshop focused on the educational setting (formal or informal) and more specifically the community engagement component in higher education.
