Dr (MJG) Gift Vinger
Registrar: Governance and Policy

Dr Gift Vinger

Dr Gift Vinger, a Bloemfonteiner and Kovsie alumnus, distinguished himself as a hard-working and dedicated student throughout his university studies. He obtained both the BA and BA Honours degrees cum laude at the former Vista University and the University of the Free State respectively.  During his BA and UED studies he received numerous awards, including best first-year male student on campus, and best final-year degree student at the university, as well as the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Award. He later won a scholarship to complete an MA degree at the Pennsylvania State University in the USA. He subsequently obtained an MBA degree from the former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, and a PhD from the University of Johannesburg.

Dr Vinger has been employed in the higher education (HE) sector for more than two and a half decades. He has gone through the ranks in both the academic and support divisions, from holding the position of Junior Professional Officer to that of Registrar. He has been Registrar since 2007, initially at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, and subsequently at the University of Zululand. Prior to becoming Registrar, he has also occupied fairly senior positions, such as Assistant Campus Registrar, and Campus Registrar at the former Vista University; Manager: Support Services, and Senior Director: General Administration at CUT.

He therefore has a demonstrable capacity to strategically lead a large and multi-layered executive portfolio by virtue of being Registrar, including management of the entire Student Services division. In addition, he has managed various divisions outside the Registrar’s portfolio at satellite campus level, such as Human Resources, Finance, Facilities, Information and Communication Technology, Protection Services, and Corporate Communications and Marketing.

Dr Vinger’s wealth of experience and knowledge of the South African HE system, and his familiarity with a plethora of regulatory material governing the sector, have enabled him to have a positive and abiding presence in the sector. In this regard, he serves/d on national boards and structures, such as the Board of the National Institute for Higher Education: Northern Cape, and also chaired its joint Finance and Audit and Risk Committees; the Board of the Central Applications Office in KwaZulu-Natal, in which he serves as a director; and the Matriculation Board. He has served in over 60 institutional committees, many of which he chaired.

He has delivered papers at international conferences, including Montego Bay, Chicago, and Barcelona, and published them in peer-reviewed journals. He has also reviewed a number of papers for an international journal, and was accordingly credited as an Associate Editor.

Dr Vinger is a Fellow of the American Council on Education. During his fellowship, he shadowed the President and Vice-President of the Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts, and visited a number of universities in the US and UK.
