The German Section cordially invites you to our fourth and final Film Evening for 2019. Metropolis (1927) will be screened on 1 October at 19:00 in the Equitas Auditorium.

Metropolis is a German expressionist science-fiction drama directed by Fritz Lang, and is based on the 1925 novel of the same name by Thea von Harbou. The silent film is regarded as a pioneering science-fiction movie, being among the first feature-length movies of that genre. Made in Germany during the Weimar period, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the master of Metropolis. The film's message is encompassed in the final intertitle: "The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart".

Die beiden versuchen die große Kluft zwischen den Klassen ihrer Stadt zu überwinden und die Arbeiter mit Joh Fredersen, dem Meister von Metropolis, zusammenzubringen. Die Botschaft des Films ist im letzten Zwischentitel enthalten: "Der Mittler zwischen Kopf und Händen muss das Herz sein".

Lore is a German-British-Australian historical drama film written by Robin Mukherjee and the director of the film, Cate Shortland. Based on the 2001 novel The Dark Room by British writer Rachel Seiffert, the film follows Lore (Saskia Rosendahl) and her four destitute siblings during the aftermath of World War II. After their high-level Nazi parents disappear in the face of certain arrest by Allied occupation authorities, the children travel 900 km to their grandmother’s home. As the Allies sweep across Germany, Lore leads her siblings on a journey that exposes them to the truth of their parents' beliefs.

Section Afrikaans and Dutch invites you to a Dutch film evening. Alles is liefde (2007) is a Dutch romantic comedy and a cheerful intertwining of various love stories. It is reminiscent of the British film, Love Actually (2003) and tells the stories of ordinary people. The deeper themes are depicted with humour and humanity.

Die Afdeling Afrikaans en Nederlands nooi u na die volgende Nederlandse filmaand. Die film, Alles is liefde (2007) is ʼn romantiese komedie en ʼn vrolike sameflansing van verskeie liefdesverhale. Dit herinner aan die Britse film, Love Actually (2003) en vertel die stories van gewone mense wat die liefde begeer, bevraagteken en beproef. Die dieper temas word met humor en medemenslikheid uitgebeeld.

As a club we try to introduce you to different film genres. Next week, 13 August, we will be screening an Astérix-adventure, but not an animated version, the real thing with real actors. And not just any actors: Gérard Dépardieu as Obélix (he was born for that role, as for Cyrano de Bergerac!) and Edouard Baer as Astérix. As the British queen, we give you … Catherine Deneuve draped in Scottish tartan. Hope to see you in the usual venue for an evening of Elgar and cultural incorrectness.

The German Section cordially invites you to our second Film Evening for 2019. Die Wand (2012) will be screened on Tuesday 7 May at 19:00 in the Equitas Auditorium (with English subtitles).

Die Wand is an Austrian-German drama film written and directed by Julian Pölsler and starring Martina Gedeck. Based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Austrian writer Marlen Haushofer, the film is about a woman who visits with friends at their hunting lodge in the Austrian Alps. Left alone while her friends walk to a nearby village, the woman soon discovers she is cut off from all human contact by a mysterious invisible wall. With her friends' loyal dog Lynx as her companion, she lives the next three years in isolation looking after her animals.
