French film : La fille du puisatier - English Version

Dear Film Friends,

On 10 March, we will be screening a film which was shown a few years ago: La fille du puisatier, the story of an unmarried young mother by Marcel Pagnol. This is a remake by Daniel Autheuil, who also stars in the role of the father. It is also Autheuil who directed the 2 remakes of the Marseille Trilogy which you have already seen, Marius and Fanny. In April we will be showing the last film in the trilogy, César, in the classic black and white version with Raimu in the role of César. So, two Pagnol movies in a row. A mini festival!

Here is a short clip from the movie : YouTube

Mephisto

The German Section cordially invites you to our first Film Evening for 2020. Mephisto (1981) will be screened on 3 March at 19:00 in the Equitas Auditorium. Mephisto is a drama film directed by world-renowned Hungarian filmmaker István Szabó, and is based on the 1936 novel of the same name by Klaus Mann. The film was awarded the 1981 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, as well as the Award for Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.

Mephisto follows a German stage actor who finds unexpected success with his performances in a Faustian play as the Nazis come into power in pre-WWII Germany. The actor, portrayed by Klaus Maria Brandauer, faces a dilemma: renounce his apolitical stance and comply with the Reich's doctrine, or face oblivion. But Faustian bargains never end well. What is the price of success?

French Film - English Version

Dear Film Friends,

This is a gentle reminder that our French movie club starts on 11 February with a film to celebrate the last days of summer: Le grand bain, translated as Sink or swim in the English version. This is a feel-good movie especially for men, who do not always get good press. The results are plain to see: these 40-somethings are having an early mid-life crisis and are trying to work through it in the swimming pool. This is not, however, a movie about men working out in a gym. (How interesting would that be?!) It’s about Ordinary Men, ordinary people, with ordinary bodies and aspirations. And it may just be one of the most inspiring movies you will see in 2020.

Please bring your (male) friends!
