Thornton Wilder’s Ons
Dorp portrays the story of a small town Grawehoek – the come-and-go of
generations, the circle of life and, of course, love and death. The script –
originally in English and set in America – is translated by Ulrich Stark.
Stark’s version of script is set in the 1900s in South Africa. The play master
(portrayed by Magda Schoeman/Aldiné van der Merwe) is, other than the rest of
the characters, in conversation with the audience. This technique breaks the
well-known fourth wall convention that the realism genre is known for. The
audience would however be able to relate to the characters, seeing that the play
is still of a realistic nature. This production is brought to the stage by the
second year drama students from the University of the Free State and is directed
by Dr Pieter Venter.
