Short CV

Dr Mikateko Höppener completed her MSc in Industrial Psychology at Universität Bremen (Germany) in 2012, and graduated with a PhD in Development Studies at the University of the Free State in 2016. During her time abroad, she worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Social Policy Research and the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre on Spatial Cognition, both at Universität Bremen. Throughout her studies, Mikateko was awarded with scholarships, grants and fellowships by organisations such as the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Academy of Sciences of South Africa (ASSAf), British Council, Newton Fund, the Human Development and Capability Association, and TOTAL. She is also a recipient of the British Association for International and Comparative Education’s Hugh Hawes bursary. Mikateko was a post-doctoral fellow at the Centre for Research on Higher Education and Development in 2016, before being appointed as Senior Researcher.

Research

Mikateko currently works on Miratho; a project on inclusive higher education learning outcomes for rural and township youth in South Africa. The project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Department for International Development (DfID) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). Before her appointment on this project, Mikateko`s research focused on engineering education and its contribution to sustainable human development. Based on this research, she has published nationally, and her first book is due to be published in 2017 in a book series on Studies in Sustainable Development by Routledge.
