Schools identify and encourage learners with an average of at least 60% in Science and Mathematics, and who show a real interest in these subjects, to enroll in the programme. One of the characteristics of effective teaching and learning is its cumulative nature. According to this principle learners will only progress if they have the necessary background knowledge. Thus, in order to maximise the impact of the ICT Laboratory activities, these learners form the target group.
Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners from different schools are attending the sessions at the ICT Laboratory. During the sessions the learners engage into curriculum related activities on a regular basis (on average about 11 times during the year).
The unique feature of the programme is the fact that provision had been made for the needs of the so called “Y-generation” or “techno-clever generation” by utilising the advantages of Information Communication Technologies (ICT’s) to create a learning environment, other than the traditional. This consequently resulted in a different approach to addressing the understanding of Science principles.
Apart from conducting experiments and other hands-on activities, learners are also exposed to events like a visit to Boyden Observatory, rocket-building as well as a Career guidance session whereby an official link is established between the learners and the University’s Unit for Prospective Students.
