The Centre for Development Support (CDS) at the University of the Free State (UFS) is a progressive research and development unit within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of the Free State (UFS) with the broad aim of promoting sustainable human development in the broader South African society. In addition to this, the CDS also presents a two-year multi-disciplinary Master's Programme in Development Studies (MDS) with lecturers from sixteen departments at the UFS, using resource-based learning. This degree is designed for people who are currently working in a development-related context, or who intend to do so.

The CDS is looking to appoint a postdoctoral fellow for one year with the possibility to extend the term depending on performance and availability of funds. Applicants should have confirmation that s/he has handed in a thesis for examination (the UFS will only make the final appointment upon the awarding of the degree), results or a degree certificate. Applicants should have a proven track record of work in the social sciences (Development Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Geography, Economics) with some evidence of having researched one of the following topics:

  • Low-income housing
  • Social and economic aspects of mine closure
  • Orphans and vulnerable children

The application must consist of an application letter, CV, and relevant documents related to the degree obtained and publications. The CDS will negotiate the starting date with the preferred candidate, but this should be as early as possible in 2020.

Postdoc amount:  R220 000 per annum
Research costs:   R30 000 per annum
