Online Education (Open and Credit Courses)

The Jonathan Edwards Centre Africa offers online courses, which are self-directing studies with an appointed adviser. Currently, we offer the following courses:

  • Introduction to Jonathan Edwards Studies
  • Research Methodology
  • Historical Theology, and
  • Philosophical Theology.

The course Introduction to Jonathan Edwards Studies offers a broad introduction to the life and thought of Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), with particular attention to A History of the Work of Redemption. Edwards was a pastor, revivalist, Christian philosopher, missionary, and college president, and is widely regarded as North America’s greatest theologian. He is the subject of intense scholarly interest because of his significance as a historical figure and the profound legacy he left on America’s religious and intellectual landscapes. His writings are being consulted at a burgeoning rate by religious leaders, pastors, and churches worldwide because of the fervency of Edwards’ message and the acumen with which he appraised religious experience.

The Research Methodology course is concerned with various research methodologies in the field of history, theology, and philosophy concentrating on research and writing skills. Applicants to the master's and PhD study programmes may be required to take this course.

The Historical Theology course is a comprehensive and systematic examination of primary text, interpretation, theory, and methods in historical theology intended to offer an informed foundation for postgraduate studies in historical theology.

The Philosophical Theology research master's study programme is a comprehensive examination of primary text, interpretation, theory, and methods of the history of philosophical theology intended to offer a well-versed and varied foundation for postgraduate studies.

Those required to take one or more of the courses, please contact neeleac@ufs.ac.za or EmmaAdamahVU@ufs.ac.za
