Short CV: Mathys Labuschagne, MB ChB, M Med (Ophth), PHD (HPE)

Mathys Labuschagne is the Head of the Clinical Simulation and Skills Unit, School of Medicine, University of the Free State.  He completed his MB ChB degree in 1981 at the University of the Orange Free State and after completing his Internship in Bethlehem he went into private practice as a general practitioner in Bloemfontein.  After twelve years in general practice he started to specialise in Ophthalmology. He completed M Med (Ophth) in 2006 and worked as a full-time consultant and lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology at Universitas Hospital in Bloemfontein.  He obtained his PHD with the title: Clinical Simulation to enhance undergraduate medical education and training at the University of the Free State, in Health Professions Education in June 2012 from the University of the Free State.

 

Mathys was appointed as head of the Clinical Simulation and Skills Unit of the School of Medicine in September 2012 and established the unit that is now fully functional.  The facility is utilised for undergraduate and postgraduate medical simulation training as well as interprofessional training.

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

  • Invited evaluation and expert in different national and international academic settings
  • Postgraduate teaching and supervision of 8 Masters and 6 Ph.D. students
  • External and internal examination of Master dissertations and PhD theses.
  • Currently supervisor for 4 PhD and one Master’s candidates.
  • Responsible for postgraduate training of Registrars in Ophthalmology in four years of training.
  • Undergraduate teaching in 7 undergraduate modules.
  • Assessment of five PhD theses and eight Master’s dissertations from UCT, Stellenbosch University, Wits, Northwest University and the UFS.
  • Undergraduate external examiner and moderator for undergraduate graduate entry medical programme (GEMP 2 and 3) at Wits.
  • Examiner and moderator for postgraduate examinations for the Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmologists at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA)

 

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

  • Published 31 articles in accredited scientific journals and one book chapter. Twenty two articles were published in the past five years.
