Short CV

Dr Wattie Janse van Rensburg is a senior lecturer in the Human Molecular Biology Unit of the School of Biomedical Sciences within the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Free State. He started his formal academic career in 2008 at the University of the Free State. He is an HPCSA-registered biomedical scientist with specialization in haematology, and has a Y-2 NRF-rating. He is a member of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) of the South African Haemophilia Foundation, and the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH). He graduated with the degrees BMedSc (Human Biology) and BMedSc Honours (Haematology), both cum laude from the University of the Free State. He completed an MMedSc (Haematology) in 2009, and obtained his PhD in haematology in 2015 from the University of the Free State. His research focus is on the molecular basis of blood and immunological disorders. He has published 23 papers in peer-reviewed journals (18 in international journals). He acts as a reviewer for five international journals. He received three young investigator awards from international professional bodies. He currently serves on both the Health Sciences Research Ethics Committee and Animal Research Ethics Committee of the University of the Free State. In 2020 he was awarded a Reach the World Fellowship from the ISTH to receive training at the Laboratory for Thrombosis Research at KU Leuven`s Kortrijk campus in Belgium.
