Ega Janse van Rensburg-Bonthuyzen is a Senior Researcher at the Centre for Health Systems Research & Development (CHSR&D). In 2000 she obtained a Master`s degree in the Sociology of Health and Health Care (cum laude) and she is currently engaged in a PhD thesis in the field of Sociology of Health and Health Care with the theme `TB programme application at Free State primary health care clinics`. Her current research focus is on the social and health systems aspects relevant to TB and HIV & AIDS in the context of the South African primary health care system. During the span of her career at the CHSR&D, she was first- or co-author of 37 research and technical reports, three chapters in peer-reviewed books/volumes, eight accredited journal articles and presented research findings and projects at 30 national and international meetings and conferences. She was employed by the Centre for Health Systems Research & Development (CHSR&D) from 1994 to 2006. In 2006 she moved to Gauteng, where she was employed by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in Johannesburg, until early 2011. During her time at CRS she worked in the South African Catholic Church`s HIV and antiretroviral treatment (ART) programme, and implemented TB infection control programmes in 24 ART sites supported by the Southern African Catholic Bishops` Conference. In 2011 she returned to the CHSR&D where she is employed at the moment. With reference to academic teaching, in 2002, she co-facilitated two distance education modules as part of a Master`s course in Development Studies at the Centre for Development Support, with the themes `Applied Development Research` and `Health and Development`. In 2003 to 2006, she continued to co-facilitate the module on Health and Development. In 2002 to 2004 she provided post-graduate supervision to two Master`s students who worked on studies in the field of Health and Development, both of whom graduated (one of them cum laude). She is currently (since 2011) supervising three Master`s students in the field of Health and Development, two of whom will be graduating in December 2012.
