Film Practice (THEF3700)
The module focuses on the pre-production, production and post-production phase of practical film making. This module is a theoretical and practical module. Students are continuously assessed on their knowledge and skills of theory and practice related to the module. The final assessment for this module will be a short film on a given theme.
Unit 1: Arts Management
In this unit, the student will be expected to understand the basic principles regarding managing their own affairs as an artist in the South African Performing Arts Industry. The purpose of this module is to develop an understanding of managing yourself as a business. Furthermore, several topics will be covered toward business and project management’s primary principles to provide the student with the necessary tools to assist with future creative endeavours.
The unit is divided into the following aspects:
• The business of the performing arts
• Fundraising
• Brand building
After successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:
• Plan, create and present a fundraising proposal
• Prepare and compile an arts management portfolio which includes a CV, a digital profile and a showreel.
Unit 2: Pre-Production
In this unit, students will be equipped with the knowledge to be able to apply basic terminology, narrative form and the elements in film analysis in pre-production when planning to produce or direct a film.
Unit 3: Production
In Unit 3, students will gain theoretical and practical knowledge concerning the mise-en-scene of a film and the cinematography and sound.
Unit 4: Post-Production
The Post-Production unit will revolve around editing a film, specifically theory and the application thereof in different genres.
