Short CV

Gerben Kamper is a lecturer at the department Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of the Free State since 2001. He obtained his B (Dram) degree at the University of Pretoria in 1971. In 1972 he became a full time actor at the then Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal (PACT). At the end of 1980 he resigned from PACT and started his free-lance career as an actor, concentrating on Theatre, Radio and Television. In 1983 he was appointed at the SABC as dubbing director en in 1984 as Organizer: Language Dubbing (directing). At the beginning of 1987 Gerben leaves the SABC in Johannesburg and moves to Bloemfontein where he was appointed as an actor/director at PACOFS. In 1988 he became Artistic Director: Drama at PACOFS. During 1996 the restructuring of the Arts Councils was introduced in the white paper on Arts and Culture. Gerben, in collaboration with members of the then PACOFS Drama Company privatized the mentioned department and Free State Ensemble, a privatized, professional drama company was established, with Gerben Kamper as Artistic Director. During September 1998 a resolution was approved by the City Council of Bloemfontein for Free State Ensemble to run the Observatory Theatre. With a new home base for Free State Ensemble, Gerben now continued with the work he has started at PACOFS, providing a platform for performances by established, as well as young up-in-coming artists. During 2001 Gerben mainly concentrated on the running of the Observatory Theatre and was also appointed part time as a lecturer at the department Drama and Theatre Arts at the University of the Free State. At the beginning of 2002 Gerben resigned as Artistic Director of Free State Ensemble and accepted a full time position as lecturer at the Drama Department of the University of the Free State. In 2007 he obtained his Baccalaureus Artium Honores – Drama and Theatre Arts cum laude at the University of the Free State. M.A. (Drama and Theatre) 2011.
