Short CV

Karen Combrinck (neé Klaasen) studied Baccalaureus Artium at the University of  Pretoria majoring in Psychology and Political Science, with Government studies, English, German and French as secondary subjects.

She started her career as journalist in 1989 at Nasionale Media Bpk. as a reporter for the newspaper, Beeld. She then worked as an Afrikaans copywriter for the South African branch of the international advertising agency The McCann Group.

Moving to Bloemfontein Mrs Combrinck was appointed senior communications officer for the Free State Provincial Government in 1992, where she gained experience in the public relations domain. She then worked at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as a copywriter for Radio Active – the SABC advertising agent for the Bloemfontein-based radio station OFM. With the privatisation of regional radio stations in 1996, she took up the post of senior journalist for SABC Radio News, doing specialist reporting for actuality programmes Monitor and Spektrum on Radio Sonder Grense, as well as AM Live and PM Live for SAfm.

Becoming a stay-at-home-mom from 1999, she worked on a freelance basis doing copywriting, writing newspaper articles, editing and proofreading, as well as writing scripts for children’s theatre. All of the children’s plays she wrote, were performed by the University of the Free State’s (UFS) drama department.

In 2014 Mrs Combrinck was appointed administrative officer for the UFS Department Drama and Theatre Arts and is currently also the administrator for Afrikaans and Dutch language acquisition short learning programmes at the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French. She obtained her Master’s degree in Creative Writing from the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch, German and French in 2018. Her manuscript Moraliteitspel: ‘n Drama in Drie Bedrywe, is currently being reviewed for publication by publishing houses.

She has language edited and proofread numerous articles and publications, including abstracts, research proposals and dissertations for Master’s degrees.
