Short CV

Jani Marais is a Junior Lecturer (units) at the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts of the University of the Free State. She completed her BA Drama and Theatre Arts in 2017 (Cum Laude), N5 Certificate in Sound Engineering in 2018 (with distinction) and BA Hons Drama and Theatre Arts in 2019 (Cum Laude). She was awarded the Elza Krantz Medal for Best Artistic Contribution in 2017. She is currently working on obtaining her MA Drama and Theatre Arts focusing on meaning-making in multi-sensory theatre. Her research focuses mostly on studying the experience and meaning-making process in live theatre by applying both Semiotic and Phenomenological philosophies. Jani specializes in Theatre Acting and Technical Aspects of Theatre. Besides her work at the university, Jani is also a professional theatre actor and technician specializing in stage management and sound operating/engineering. In July of 2021 Jani was selected to be one of 16 artists from across the country to attend the Creative Practices Laboratory, a Vrystaat Arts Festival initiative that brings artists of various disciplines together to create experimental interdisciplinary art.
