About

Johandi du Plessis is a South African artist, researcher and junior lecturer in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She has been teaching in the Fine Arts Department at the University of the Free State since 2015. Du Plessis has participated in over forty exhibitions, including international and national art competitions, Absa L`atelier and Sasol New Signatures. She has recently been awarded the esteemed Ampersand Foundation Arts Residency in New York and Ampersand Fellowship.

Qualifications

Magister Artium in Fine Arts (cum laude), a full thesis and full exhibition obtained at the University State in 2024. Dissertation title: Curious image objects and South African social imaginaries: Place, desire, power. Exhibition title: VIRAL IMAGES held at Oliewenhuis Art Museum, Bloemfontein.

Supervisors: Professor Janine Allen-Spies (Artist and Associate Professor, Fine Arts), Professor Suzanne Human (Associate Professor, Art History and Image Studies) and Professor Willem Boshoff (Artist and Associate Professor, Fine Arts)

Her solo exhibition, VIRAL IMAGES, is on show at Oliewenhuis Art Museum, Bloemfontein, South Africa, from 24 November 2022 until 12 February 2023. Selected as one of fourteen of South Africa`s most promising emerging and mid-career artists to partake in the experimental and interdisciplinary residency, OPENLab Arts Residency 2016: The art of being social, Programme for Innovation in Artform Development (PIAD), Modern Art Projects South Africa (MAPSA), Richmond, South Africa.
