Jean-Pierre Calitz: Former Kovsie music student gives piano recital

Jean-Pierre Calitz was the first prizewinner of the MUSICON National Piano competition (Now Arts Trust Competition) in 2001 and 2002 as well as the MUSICON Soloists Competition in 2003. He was a member of the winning ensemble at the Stellenbosch Chamber Music Competition in 2002 where he was the only pianist to receive a prize for outstanding ensemble playing.

During his undergraduate university career Jean-Pierre was awarded merit scholarships by the University of the Free State and Music study scholarships by the South African Music Rights Organization. He was a participant in master classes with Niel Immelman (Royal College of Music - London), Andrea Bonnata (Italy), Petronel Malan (USA), Dana Cilliers and Nina Schumann. In 2006, Jean-Pierre was invited to perform the Mozart Quintet for Winds and Piano with the University Wind Quintet for the Stellenbosch University’s annual International Chamber Music Festival. In the same year, as a member of the South African National Youth Orchestra, he toured to Germany to perform at the well-known Beethovenfest.

His main teachers in South Africa were Nettie Immelman, Ella Fourie and Albie van Schalkwyk. He furthered his studies at the Western Michigan University in the United States where he studied with Silvia Roederer. He was named a Gilmore International Keyboard Festival Fellow - which included a master class performance for André Watts.

He recently graduated with a Masters degree in Piano performance. In the summer of 2009/10 he studied with Bachauer Gold Medalist, Lori Sims, at the Bayview Music festival. Jean-Pierre is a candidate for the Doctorate in Music (piano performance) at the Université de Montréal under Paul Stewart. His research is focused on the "Fairytales" by Nikolai Medtner.

Jean-Pierre was selected as a competitor of the UNISA National Piano Competition in Pretoria from 9 – 16 July 2011.
