Gender Studies Programme

The Gender Studies Programme is an academic postgraduate programme in the Faculty of the Humanities. Gender Studies equips students with relevant knowledge in the gender studies discipline, which interrogates gender inequities prevalent in Africa and internationally.

What is Gender Studies?

Gender Studies is an academic discipline that investigates the socially conditioned gendered behaviour of men and women. The discipline seeks to represent gendered behaviours that perpetuate inequities in society, organisations and relationships. Gender is a useful category for addressing contemporary injustices and inequitable treatment of men and women in the world.

Vision

The vision of the programme is to equip individuals with the knowledge and analytical skills to engage constructively and creatively with the changing paradigm in gender relations.

Core Functions

The core functions of the Gender Studies programme include research and postgraduate teaching. The programme draws on expertise from a diverse range of departments and divisions on the UFS campus.

Women’s Day
