In light of the Human Project of the UFS, and recognising the need for legal services in the context of previous experiences at the UFS, the FSCHR works in close collaboration with the UFS Law Clinic. The clinic provides a legal service and mediation function with the objective to solve conflicts outside formalised legal and disciplinary processes, with the aim of advancing reconciliation using restorative justice processes. The principles of accountability and transparency will be adhered to at all times.

MISSION

It is the mission of the FSCHR, in collaboration with the UFS Law Clinic, to ensure the promotion and protection of human rights and constitutional values institutionally, provincially, nationally, and internationally.

OBJECTIVES

The key objective of the Legal Services division is to increase access to justice in rural and indigent communities of the Free State.

Other specific objectives of the UFS Law Clinic, in partnership with the FSCHR, are to:

i.                 provide trustworthy legal services to all individuals and groups whose fundamental rights have been abused; ii.                improve the professional capacities of paralegals, students, counsellors, social workers, candidate attorneys and attorneys, equipping them to deal with cases of infringement of constitutional and human rights; iii.              conduct legal and democracy workshops aimed at informing communities of their rights and duties, thereby empowering them to counter exploitation and abuse; and iv.              publicise the plight of abused people and the seriousness of injustices against them.
