Call for participants to join the Academy for Multilingualism Hub

Eroding Dichotomies: Description, Analysis and Publishing in African Linguistics Writing Workshop: 22 - 27 July 2022

Applications are now open for a residential writing workshop aimed at aspiring early career writers, voice over artists, editors and translators to form part of the UFS Multilingual Hub launched recently. The focus of the hub is on the following languages, IsiZulu, Afrikaans and Sesotho. 
The workshop will take place at the University of the Free State from the 22 - 27 of July 2022. The UFS Academy for Multilingualism aims to promote African Languages on institutional and social levels through various academic and community-based projects and initiatives. To implement multilingualism on campus, the following drivers have been earmarked:

• Advance Sesotho and isiZulu as academic languages
• Incorporate multilingualism into learning and teaching
• Promote multilingualism as a social asset

To achieve a fully multilingual campus among others, the academy will be creating multilingual academic glossaries, producing PhD abstract translations, providing voice-overs for digital lessons, facilitating trans-language tutorial sessions in various faculties, and raining of personnel in teaching within multilingual classrooms.
To achieve all these objectives, the academy requires writers, translators, editors, voice over experts and language authenticators.  Unfortunately, this are skills that are in shortage currently in the country. 

What is the goal of the workshop?

The workshop brings together aspiring early career writers, voice over artists, editors and translators. Through critical reflection, guidance and (peer-) mentoring. The workshop will develop and hone participants’ writing, translation, editing and voice artistic skills and their understanding of the creative, editorial and translation processes. Each participant will make a choice of their choice field of interest after the two day workshop on the creative world.

Who can attend?

The workshop is open to 60 registered UFS Students, 15 UFS staff members and 25 members of the community. All applicants must be prepared to stay with the Hub and attend all workshops for the duration of the semester. Preference will be given to applicants who are one way or the other involved in writing books, translations, editing or voice recordings. 

How much does it cost?

The workshop is free for all accepted participants.
