Research

The sub-projects in our research plan form part of a holistic approach to change animal genotypes to optimally utilise varying and diverse environments. The improvement, and especially conservation, of indigenous livestock breeds thus form an integral part of this 'mega project'. More than one project or a combination of many ongoing sub-projects is needed to comprehensively address this multi-faceted problem.

Broad research themes

  • Practical application of modern techniques for (co)variance component estimation and breeding value prediction;
  • Defining breeding objectives for efficiency of production.
  • Phenotypic and genetic characterisation of indigenous and other African livestock breeds
