Eminent researcher from the University of Oxford in England visits our department

Prof Elspeth Garman, eminent researcher from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford in England, was hosted by Dr Alice Brink at the end of March 2017. Prof Garman presented a lecture on crystallography, taught a short course on protein crystal data refinement and crystallography techniques, and had a discussion with female members of the Vice-Chancellor's Prestige Scholars Programme (PSP) on the challenges faced by young staff members.

Her visit ended with a barbecue and the sharing of her famous baked Alaska recipe.

Former Vice-President of the International Union of Crystallography (and former President of the European Crystallographic Association) visits UFS Chemistry

We were honoured to welcome Prof Claude Lecomte from the Institut Jean Barriol , Université de Lorraine (formerly Henri Poincaré University), Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, France, at the UFS Department of Chemistry on 28 Jan 2017 on initiative of Inorganic Chemistry.

Prof Lecomte is an enthusiastic advocate for the improvement of science in Africa and through his initiatives as president of the ECA (2000-2003), and vice-president of the IUCr (2011-2014), contributed to the expansion of crystallography on the continent. His talk on charge density was followed by a 'braai' in the Chemistry quad.
