The undergraduate programmes for Consumer Science are not selection programmes, therefore applications should be submitted in accordance with the UFS set application dates. The following admission requirements apply (NAS Rulebook 2018):


B Consumer Science

  1. NSC or NCV with an endorsement that allows to degree studies or an equivalent qualification.
  2. A minimum AP of 30.
  3. A performance level 4 (50%) in an official tuition language.
  4. Participation in the National Benchmark (NBT) tests for language.

In addition to the above-mentioned, for the BSc Consumer Science, these requirements are also applicable:

  1. Mathematics on level 5 (60%).
  2. Life sciences level 5 (60%).
  3. Physical science level 4 (50%).



BSc (Hons) Consumer Science

  1. Consumer Science or relevant NQF at level 7 with at least 60%.

Master’s Degrees

  1. All master’s degrees are selection programmes and admission to these degrees is subject to approval of the Academic Departmental Head.
  2. Applicants must apply for admission to the master’s degree. The completed forms are submitted toe the Programme Director.
  3. The master’s research starts on a date as determined by the relevant department.
  4. Each module in the learning programs must be successfully completed.
  5. Applicants must have an applicable Bacholor Honours degree or equivalent NQF exit level 8 with an average of 60% in the exit year of the relevant honours degree, as well as the additional requirements per discipline (see Reg NAS3.5).
  6. If a student does not entirely meet the admission requirements, the dean may, in consultation with the Academic Departmental Head, in meritorious cases recommend that some concessions be made in respect of the requirements.


PhD degrees

  1. All PhD degrees are selection programs and admission to these degrees is subject to approval by the Academic Departmental Head.
  2. The PhD student must show that he/she has sufficient knowledge of the subject prior to admission. Students should apply for admittance and the completed forms submitted to the Program Director.
  3. Applicants must have a masters degree or equivalent NQF exit level 9 qualification.
