The Minquiz science competition, organised by the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek), started in 1988, with entries initially accepted only from schools in the vicinity of Mintek's offices in Randburg. Over the years, the competition has grown to a national one and the Department of Geology has been hosting the Free State provincial leg of the Minquiz National Science Competition for Grade 12 learners since 2012. Schools can enter teams of three Grade 12 learners into one of two categories (Gold or Platinum) depending on historical performance in the National Senior Certificate examinations.

The provincial competition consists of a written quiz, followed by an oral quiz for the schools obtaining the highest marks in the written quiz. Top-performing schools in the oral quiz win cash prizes that can be used towards improving the schools' science teaching capabilities. Top-performing individuals in the written quiz make up the Free State provincial team that will attend the National Competition in Randburg.
