Short CV

I am passionate about biodiversity and conservation and throughout my postgraduate studies this interest has expanded to the evolutionary history of Africa’s rich floral diversity and how knowledge of this evolutionary history can be applied in developing conservation strategies and sustainable agriculture. In my lab we employ a multidisciplinary approach to solving taxonomic problems and discovering evolutionary linkages between selected plant species in the Apocynaceae, Asteraceae, Acanthaceae and Scrophulariaceae families. Basic taxonomic knowledge is combined with experimental techniques in pollination biology and floral evolutionary development in a number of collaborative projects with scientist from around the world to discover the relationship between plant adaptations for pollination and the diversity of flowering plants on earth.

Area(s) of Interest

My main research interest lies with the taxonomy, biogeography and pollination biology of the Periplocoideae (Apocynaceae) and I have undertaken field work for this research in many parts of South Africa. I am involved in several local and international collaborative projects dealing with the systematics and pollination biology of Periplocoideae. Lately I’ve also collaborated in a number of taxonomic revisions of small, endemic genera of the Asteraceae and Scrophulariaceae, most of which grow in the Western Cape and Northern Cape.
