Short CV

Maryke Labuschagne is professor of Plant Breeding in the department of Plant Sciences at the University of the Free State. She is currently the chair of the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) in disease resistance and quality in field crops. She has been involved in the training of especially PhD students from all over Africa for the last 20 years. She has been the main supervisor to 55 PhD students from as far as Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria and Sudan, to the SADC countries including Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. She was also main supervisor to 52 MSc students. She and her students have authored 206 scientific papers in mainly ISI listed journals. She has authored or co-authored 96 papers at national and 89 papers at international conferences.

She has active collaboration with CIMMYT in Zimbabwe and Kenya on maize breeding, and with IITA in Nigeria and National Programmes in Malawi, Uganda and Ghana on cassava. She works with CIMMYT in Mexico, and the Agricultural University of Sweden   on wheat quality, and with Michigan State University on maize quality.

She received the “Continental Lifetime Achiever Award” of “Africa’s Most Influential Women in Business and Government” in 2015, the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Award for life and earth sciences for the continent in January 2012.  She was named grain scientist of the year for 2012 by Grain South Africa. She was elected as National Agriculturalist of South Africa for 2008 by the Agricultural Writers’ Association of South Africa, and winner of the National Science and Technology Forum award in the category of research capacity development in the last 5-10 years in 2008. She was appointed to the GMO (genetically modified organisms) Appeals Board by the South African minister of Agriculture for 2006/07; 2010/2011 and in 2015/2016. She is also a representative on the advisory committee of the South African government on GMO’s from 2005 to currently. She is currently the South African representative to the American Association for Cereal Chemists International. She was president of the Southern African Plant Breeders’ Association for the period 2000-2002.
