UFS Research Master's and Doctoral Bursaries 

The University of the Free State will be providing financial support (partial tuition fee) to Research Masters and Doctoral students for the year 2021. The UFS Master's and Doctoral Bursary is a once-off award for Master’s and Doctoral students.

  • First year Research Master’s and Doctoral students (once-off funding)
  • Second year Research Master’s and Doctoral students who have submitted progress reports and made satisfactory progress (once-off funding)
  • Third year Doctoral students who have submitted progress reports with satisfactory progress (once-off funding)
  • Third year Research Master’s students who received the UFS Tuition Fee Bursary in 2020 and submitted progress reports with satisfactory progress (once-off funding); and
  • Fourth year Doctoral students who received the UFS Tuition Fee Bursary in 2020 and submitted progress reports with satisfactory progress (once-off funding)

Doug Banks Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies  


Would you like to be part of changing Africa’s energy future?

The Doug Banks scholarship for post-graduate studies is a two-year scholarship that aims to support students who are eligible to study for a master’s degree at a South African university commencing in 2022. Applicants should have a background in either engineering, science, environment and geographical science, finance, economics, or development studies.

The closing date for applications is Monday 4 October 2021. Only South African citizens or permanent residents may apply

2022 NRF Postgraduate Student Funding

The NRF Postgraduate Student Funding for the 2022 academic year is now open for applications. All continuing students who are eligible for a second or third year of funding must submit a progress report and not a new application.

To be eligible for selection for funding, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum academic average of 65% attained in the previous degree; and

  • Be 28, 30 and 32 years or younger for honours, master’s, and doctoral studies respectively, in the year of application, regardless of the first year of registration.

All interested postgraduate students must apply on the NRF Online Submission System by accessing the link: https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za/No manual applications will be accepted.

Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development Bursary 

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD) intends to award comprehensive bursaries (Advanced Diploma, BSc Hons, MSc, and PhD) to qualifying applicants pursuing and/or intending to further their studies in identified careers in agriculture, land reform, and rural development sector for the 2022 academic year.

The bursary will cover tuition, accommodation, books, meals, and a monthly allowance. The bursary awards target the previously disadvantaged and impoverished persons from poverty-stricken and rural communities. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Please note:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens.
  • Applicants must complete the relevant bursary application forms available from the website address
  • Applicants who apply for fields of study that are not listed above will not be considered
  • Please note that communication will be limited to successful applicants only. If you have not received any communication from the department within 14 days after the release of Grade 12 results and after the National Bursary Committee has finalised the selection process, consider your application unsuccessful
  • The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development reserves the right to determine the total number of bursary allocations for the academic year based on the total budget available.
  • No late application forms will be considered.
  • Applicants who are not in possession of their University acceptance letter or Final results can submit their application while waiting for the said documents.
