  • Our Disaster Risk Management and Education Centre for Africa (DiMTEC) offers Africa’s only postgraduate qualification in disaster management. Working professionals can complete the course in two years. For a first in Africa, DiMTEC has signed a memorandum of agreement with the United Nations University (UNU).
  • In 2009, our Faculty of Theology established a Jonathan Edwards Center for Africa, affiliated to the main centre at Yale University, USA. It serves as a hub for the study of the evangelist, Jonathan Edwards. The relationship between Yale University and the UFS is unprecedented, attracting doctoral students from Southern Africa, South Korea and America.
  • The Institute for Reconciliation and Social Justice is a critical space where engaged scholarship, public discussion, community engagement and teaching are innovatively integrated towards exploring and finding solutions to the complex and challenging work of social transformation in South Africa. The institute is committed to enabling change at the university, as well as contributing to transformation in South Africa.
  • The UFS Schools Partnership Project aims to turn around learner performance in the last three grades of secondary school leading to the Senior Certificate Examination. Twenty-three schools in the Free State are already part of this project where the innovative model focuses on direct mentoring of principals and teachers as well as subject matter competence in accountancy, physical science and mathematics.
  • We house a BioPAD Platform for Metagenomics. The platform forms part of a network of specialist research platforms across South Africa. The BioPAD board awarded UFS R13,7 million to conduct research into prehistoric micro-organisms living under extreme conditions, e.g. in mineshafts.
  • The Unit for Students with Disabilities serves students with disabilities and ensures access to courses, buildings, learning material, residences, leisure and sport activities for all students on an equal basis. The unit coordinates assistance to all relevant persons in the academic process and other aspects of student life, namely the disabled student, staff members, visitors and fellow students.
  • The Unit for Children’s Rights promotes research and training in the field of children’s rights. The Human Trafficking Initiative Unit establishes cooperation with various national and international stakeholders and researchers to combat human trafficking.
  • A group of 24 staff members from different faculties are currently involved in a research capacity-building and mentoring programme while they are drafting their doctoral research proposals. Many of these academics have registered at international universities and are working to achieve the academic milestone of completing and defending their research proposals.

 

The programme is implemented in collaboration with internationally recognised faculty members from highly rated Dutch and South African universities. The group works closely together and has created a network of critical scholars who provide feedback and form a very important support network for one another.
