Message from the Director

Welcome to all students who are embarking on their postgraduate journey at the University of the Free State. The postgraduate journey is both a stimulating learning experience and a challenging personal experience. The transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies and even from Master's to doctoral studies often requires important adjustments in the way we think about our academic work, our motivation for enrolling for postgraduate studies and our academic competencies.

Socially, many students experience postgraduate studies as isolating, as many of the processes take place when students are on their own, reading, thinking and writing. The good news is that there is ample support available to postgraduate students dealing with these challenges. Apart from the support and guidance of your research supervisors, the Postgraduate School presents many workshops that focus on the development of critical skills that postgraduate students require to be successful research students. We are also in the process of establishing an on-line support and development network for off-campus postgraduate students and investigating more effective ways in which we can interact with our students and facilitate interaction between students from different disciplines and geographical locations.

Our range of workshops equips students with knowledge and skills that will not only help you in your studies but also in your future careers. We present workshops on topics including academic writing, proposal writing, qualitative and quantitative research methodology and writing articles from your thesis. The Postgraduate School also provides opportunities to build social networks with students in your own and other faculties. Our monthly coffee mornings are very popular and we also invite postgraduate students to bring in and enjoy their lunch in our postgraduate lounge. Our Postgraduate Student Council offers various academic and social activities to help with their integration into campus life.

Apart from our capacity building and social activities we are also expanding funding opportunities for postgraduate students. We bring representatives from international and national funding organisations to the campus to assist students with applications for prestigious bursaries and fellowships. We have developed a funding brochure that will be available on our website soon.

I invite all students to add their names to our mailing list at postgrad@ufs.ac.za to ensure that we keep you informed of all our programmes and opportunities.
