About the Postgraduate Student Council

The Postgraduate Student Council (PGSC) is a student body that advocates on behalf of postgraduate students at the University of the Free State (UFS). Established in 2011, the PGSC forms part of the university’s governing structures and ensures the representation of postgraduate students at management level in accordance with the Higher Education Act of South Africa. The chairperson of the PGSC has a seat on the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Higher Degrees Committee of the UFS. In line with the values of accountability, integrity, unity, fairness, and excellence, the PGSC strives to serve the postgraduate student community through the promotion of the academic and human projects of the UFS. The PGSC also aspires to lead by example in the advancement of transformation, diversity, and multiculturalism.

The Postgraduate Student Council aims to:

  • Promote a high standard of academic excellence among the Postgraduate Student Community
  • To, in cooperation with the SRC, serve the interests of Postgraduate Students, the UFS and Postgraduate Student Community without partiality, bias, prejudice, discrimination, or preference of any form.
  • To serve Postgraduate Students and Postgraduate Student Community with humility, integrity, excellence and earnestness
  • Bridge the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Ensure equal access to postgraduate information such as funding, academic support and other related postgraduate opportunities
  • Improve the interaction between postgraduate students and society through community outreach initiatives
  • To create a social space for all postgraduate students from diverse backgrounds and academic disciplines
  • To lead by example in the establishment of transformation, diversity and multiculturalism within the

The PGSC works closely with the Postgraduate School and in collaboration organises the local Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, the postgraduate welcoming and year-end function. Additionally, the PGSC has standing external community engagement relationships with the Tswelopele Correctional Centre in Kimberley and the Central University of Technology (Community Engagement Office).
