The University of the Free State appreciates and acknowledges the bright sparks in Grade 12 and is the organiser of the Matriculant of the Year Competition and the Star of Stars Competition. Both these competitions open on 1 April. The key is to incentivise students in the Free State and South Africa to be top achievers, but most importantly, to support them to overcome difficult circumstances, opening them up to greater opportunities in their student life and future careers. We encourage bright sparks in Grade 12 to enter these competitions, as the benefits and prizes are tremendous in terms of bursaries, personal development, and exposure.

By the end of 1980, Volksblad and the University of the Free State, together with BANKOVS, expressed the desire to launch a competition that would be unique to the Free State. The main objective of the competition was to identify top matriculant girls in the distribution area of Volksblad who wished to study at the UFS.

The first Matric Girl Competition was launched in 1981. The founding partners were Volksblad, who provided the necessary media exposure, BANKOVS, who provided the bursary for study at the UFS, and the UFS, who organised the competition. In 1985, Volkskas Bank replaced BANKOVS in the partnership.

In 1997, the competition changed to the ‘Matriculant of the Year’ Competition. For the first time, boys were allowed to enter. The criteria to enter are achievement in academics, leadership, culture, and sports.

The judging of the Matriculant of the Year Competition is based on achievements at academic, cultural, and sports level, and also takes into account leadership and personality. The judges are looking for a versatile and balanced matriculant. Twenty-five semi-finalists are chosen from the entries, judged according to a points scale based on the information obtained from the entry forms.

The Matriculant of the Year, as well as the finalist with the best personal achievement, is announced at a prestigious gala dinner. A prize is also awarded to the finalist with the most spirited personality.

In 2019, the Matriculant of the Year Competition will celebrate the 39th year of this national and prestigious competition in partnership with Volksblad.

Learners from Quintile 1-5 can enter. We are very proud of the 2018 winner, Anel Kleingeld, from Eunice Secondary School for Girls in Bloemfontein.

The Star of Stars Competition is aimed at targeting recruitment, but mostly acknowledging top achievers in Quintile 1, 2, and 3 schools. In 2019, the fourth group will enter this competition which has grown in leaps and bounds from just three districts to all five districts in the Free State.

The Star of Stars Competition is holistic, empowering finalists through career counselling, mentorship, and guidance on campus life. Entries are evaluated in three categories, i.e. academic performance, leadership achievements, and community involvement.

Thabang Sithela from L.A. Wesi Secondary School in Allanridge is the worthy winner of the 2018 group.
