Welcome to Economic and Management sciences

Only the brightest young minds can face the economics of change. In the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences we bring theory and practice together.

We are a dynamic and innovative faculty that effectively meets the demands and challenges of the fast-changing economic and management environment. The inputs from the private sector as well as the professional and general community were considered in the design of our programmes.

The faculty has five departments:

  • Accounting 
  • Business Management 
  • Economics 
  • Industrial Psychology 
  • Public Administration and Governance

Degree programmes

At the Qwaqwa Campus, we offer two bachelor’s degrees:

  1. Baccalaureus Commercii (i.e. Bachelor of Commerce – BCom) degree in General Management
  2. Baccalaureus Administrationis (i.e. Bachelor of Administration – BAdmin) degree.

You can enrol for either the three- or four-year BCom or BAdmin degree. For both degrees, you need:

  • A minimum AP score of 25 for the four-year programmes and a minimum AP score of 29 for the three-year programmes, and
  • An achievement level of 4 (50%) for English Grade 12.
  • The four-year BCom degree requires a level 3 (40%) Mathematics in Grade 12, and
  • The three-year BCom degree requires level 4 (50%) Mathematics in Grade 12.

If you are interested in management, but cannot decide on a speciality, then the general BCom option is perfect for you. The BCom General Management degree is designed to equip each student for various career options in the broader fields of Economics and Management (private and public sector, and tertiary institutions).

You will be prepared for many careers in a broad field, and can specialise at postgraduate level, if you want to.

The study fields for the BCom (General Management) degree include:

  • Accounting (Accounting, Cost and Management Accounting)
  • Business Management (General Management, Marketing; Entrepreneurship; Small Business Management, Strategic Management)
  • Economics (Micro- and Macroeconomics; Labour and International Economics; Development Economics and Public Finance)
  • Industrial Psychology (Human Resources Management, Organisational Psychology; Employee and Labour Relations; Career Psychology; Research Methodology and Training and Development)
  • Public Management (Public Human Resource Management, Financial Management; Public Policy).

The BAdmin degree is a specialised degree aimed at a career in the public sector, parastatal institutions, trade unions, non-governmental organisations, and tertiary institutions. If you would like to specialise, you can do so at postgraduate level.

The study fields for the BAdmin degree include:

  • Public Administration and Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Public Financial Management
  • Organisational Analysis
  • Public Policy
  • Monitoring and Evaluation of Public Sector
  • Supply Chain Management
