The digital transformation of economic, social, and political life is the defining structural condition of the twenty-first century. It is reshaping the conditions of human becoming in ways that existing philosophical and juridical frameworks are poorly equipped to address. Algorithmic systems sort, rank, predict, and foreclose human possibility at immense scale and at speed. Platform economies restructure labour, care, and social connection. Artificial intelligence is increasingly embedded in the decisions that determine access to credit, employment, education, healthcare, and justice. These are not merely technical developments. On the ubuntu account, they are interventions in the relational webs through which persons become themselves; interventions with profound consequences for flourishing and for flourishing denied. Rosi Braidotti's posthumanism offers one route beyond the human/non-human and human/machine binaries this moment demands we contest; ubuntu's relational ontology offers another, with roots closer to home.
