The relational claim does not end at the border. This strand follows it to the scale at which persons, having become themselves through their communities and their communities through their polities, become a world: a community of communities whose fates are bound and whose flourishing cannot be secured in isolation. The Indian Ocean region, the African continent, and the Global South more broadly are where this global becoming is most actively reimagined and contested, and where the dominant grammar of international order, sovereign self-interest tempered by charity, is most visibly unequal to problems that are relational to their core: pandemics, which travel as our connections travel; climate breakdown, whose harms fall where responsibility does not; the governance of shared waters, data, and commons that belong to no one because they belong to all. Read through ubuntu, global justice is not benevolence extended from the fortunate but the recognition of a relation that already obtains, and that is denied whenever the becoming of some is purchased with the foreclosure of others. The strand develops ubuntu as a resource for global governance, not as an exotic supplement to Western cosmopolitanism but as an account of why the obligation exists at all.
