Description: Prof Coetzee opening speech of school Tags: opening speech Prof Daniella Coetzee

“The majority of these teachers have been placed in classes where they have little or no training or experience in the teaching of the Sciences,” says Prof Daniella Coetzee, Dean of the School of Open Learning.

“Their eagerness to learn and to participate in the workshops is therefore truly commendable. To be able to work with these groups of teachers is a privilege – they are taken through the content of the subjects and then focus on methodology.

“Experienced staff members contracted by the School of Open Learning perform a mammoth task by visiting each of the teachers at their respective schools twice a year.

"The focus of these visits is developmental, and lecturers spend quality time at the schools. Most of these schools are situated in rural areas – the footprint of the UFS is taken to areas most of us do not even know existed.”
