UFS Career Week: Theology and Religion

On Wednesday 16 August 2023, the University of the Free State (UFS) Career Services hosted a masterclass for students from the Faculty of Theology and Religion. Several interesting topics were discussed during this dialogue-focused session, which was mostly attended by undergraduate students and a few postgraduate students. In line with the current trend, attendance was mostly in-person with a couple of virtual attendees.

As the world becomes more integrated, theology and religious studies gain relevance in order to navigate diversity. It is no longer a field of study exclusively for ministering but can be applied to several fields. The topics discussed addressed, among others, the universal application of theology and religious studies. Specific questions were:

• How do theology and religion intersect with other fields and professions outside of academia and the church?
• In what ways can a background in theology or religious studies enhance a career in other fields?
• Are there any trends or emerging opportunities where knowledge of theology or religion could be particularly valuable in the job market?

The masterclass concluded with a personal branding session presented by Dr Rammile, who also encouraged participants to diversify their offerings.
 
 

 
 

Participants enjoyed the session and noted that they gained much value from the content. Most agreed that they would like to see similar initiatives on different topics, including women in ministry and theology in popular culture. “I’ve learned that Theology is not like all other degrees,” a student noted, “it is a lifestyle where things are always changing and where we always have to adapt. I also learned that there is more to theology than having to practise it from behind a pulpit. I have to spread my wings – the world is waiting.”

Several interesting topics were discussed during this dialogue-focused session.
