From 1 to 5 August, the University of the Free State Career Services presented a tailor-made career week for students in the Faculty of the Humanities. This was a hybrid event with online and in-person sessions on both the Bloemfontein and Qwaqwa campuses, covering a wide variety of career-related topics.
The online sessions covered career information in history, politics, governance, psychology, sociology, criminology, communication, social work, fine arts, linguistics, and language practice, as well as financial coaching – because learning to work for money is just as important as learning how to let your money work for you!
Prof Heidi Hudson, Dean: Faculty of the Humanities, welcomed students to the in-person sessions, which were also streamed. Students listened to Thabo Olivier speaking about social entrepreneurship before browsing through the company exhibits and Career Closet. The Career Closet is a Career Services initiative that provides casual and professional clothing appropriate for interviews at no cost to students.
On the Qwaqwa Campus, students enjoyed company exhibits, CV-writing and job interview crash courses, a social entrepreneurship session, and guest speaker Fanafikile Lephaka.
The Career Week helped me to think about how I can make my degree work for me, even if I don’t get employment.
Students on both campuses valued this initiative. “I was always interested in becoming an entrepreneur, but never trusted myself enough. But now I’m confident to fight all the way,” one commented. Another said that “the Career Week helped me to think about how I can make my degree work for me, even if I don’t get employment."
