What is a HWA?

A HWA is an employee (regardless of job grade or job level) of the UFS who is nominated or volunteers to be involved in the Health and Wellness programme.
HWAs are trained and supported to advocate and promote Health and Wellness-related issues within the UFS community.

The enrolment process:

  • Potential HWA candidates can volunteer
  • Volunteers can also be nominated by their colleagues

Attributes of a good HWA:

  • Sensitive to issues of Health and Wellness
  • Committed to respond to the HIV and AIDS epidemic
  • A willingness to initiate and partake in conversations

HWA training:

  • Introduction to Health and Wellness
  • Basic overview of HIV and AIDS
  • UFS referral systems
  • Life skills
  • Administration and reporting skills
  • HWAs are equipped with Resources and Training material

Supervision:
Ongoing support and training is offered through monthly mentoring sessions

Monitoring and reporting:

  • Attendance at mentoring sessions
  • Monitoring of referrals
  • Monitoring attendance and assessment of involvement in Health and Wellness related events

Responsibilities of a HWA:

  • Attendance of monthly mentoring sessions
  • Initiation of informal conversations
  • Assistance in Health and Wellness activities
  • Referral to relevant services

Resources:
HWAs are equipped with the following:

  • Training material
  • Resources
  • Ongoing training and support
